The inside structure, or “pulp”, of a tooth is a vulnerable tissue that can easily become inflamed and infected. With clinical precision and using specially designed instruments and magnification, your specialist Endodontist will remove the diseased and infected pulp. While locally anaesthetised, an opening is made within the biting surface of the tooth to allow access to the pulp and infected area. The root canal system will then be cleaned, enlarged and shaped to relieve pain and discomfort, and ultimately saving your original tooth.
Root canal therapy is needed when the tooth’s pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to decay, cracks, gum disease, or trauma. Symptoms may include:
Using modern techniques, most patients remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Adelaide Endodontic Specialists offer Intravenous Sedation for patients experiencing high anxiety.
Post-treatment, your tooth may be sensitive, especially if it was previously infected or painful. This can be relieved with over-the-counter or prescribed medications as advised by your endodontist.
Your tooth may feel slightly different for some time after treatment. If you experience severe pain, pressure, or prolonged discomfort, please contact us for a follow-up.
While all general dentists have training in root canals, Endodontists are specialist dentists with a further three years post graduate training in the more complex root canal therapy.
Generally speaking, a dentist specialises in exterior teeth and gum health, an endodontist specialises in the internal health of the tooth.
While tooth extraction is an option, preserving the natural tooth is typically more advantageous in the long run.
Removing and replacing a tooth requires additional treatments and procedures, which can also affect adjacent teeth and the gums. If a tooth infection is not treated, it can spread to other parts of the body, potentially becoming life-threatening.
Root canal therapy removes the infected pulp to save your original tooth, so you can maintain a healthy, natural smile.
Depending on your individual circumstances, generally two appointments are required to complete your root canal therapy. A medication to control bacteria and make your tooth comfortable will be placed in the root canals between appointments.
At a follow up appointment, the inside of the tooth will again be cleaned before being filled and sealed.
Upon completion, a comprehensive report will be sent to your general dentist who will then place either a full coverage filling or crown, restoring your tooth to its full function and appearance.
Root canal therapy is usually very successful, especially with an experienced endodontist. However, some cases may not heal as expected or remain painful due to persistent or recurring infection.
Typically spread over two or three appointments, the tooth is reopened, removing the original root filling, reshaping and medicating the canals, and sealing the medication inside. After allowing time for the medication to work and the infection to heal, the canals are refilled.
Though retreatment is highly successful, you might need a new filling or crown during or after the process. We will refer you back to your dentist for this when necessary.
